Craftsman is a pretty reliable and decent brand that has produced excellent tools over the years, so here’s my review of the Craftsman 18in Chainsaw.

Craftsman has been around for quite a long time, serving both beginners & professionals alike. Their line of chainsaws is useful, reliable, and extremely durable for both frequent or occasional use.

And I recently got my hands on their 18-Inch 41BY4218791 S185 chainsaw model. My review today will be based on my first hands on experience using the tool for some occasional cutting tasks. I’ll provide a detailed impression of the tool along with some pros & cons.

With that said, there’s quite a bit to talk about so let’s get started right away.

Unboxing & First Impressions

The chainsaw arrived safe in a compact & secure box that was easy to open. In the box, I got the Craftsman 18In chainsaw with a plastic cover over the chainsaw. I expected to find an extra chain but unfortunately there wasn’t any in the box.

When I first lifted it out of the box, I realized it was pretty lightweight & portable. All I had to do was to remove the chain guard as it was already assembled. I didn’t notice anything out of order. Everything was intact.

The owner’s manual was great too. I’ve heard stories of buyers who didn’t get the correct user’s manual but mine was there. So how did she run? Let’s find out in the next section.

Testing the Chainsaw

Since this is a pull-start kind of chainsaw, I did have to give it a few pulls before she could start running. Cutting was wonderful as it ran very well. It has a decent power for the engine size & didn’t give me any trouble.

I started it off on some softwood and the chain went through like a hot knife through butter. I got the same results with hardwood. However, I did notice I had to apply a little bit of pressure on hardwood than on softwood. Additionally, the chainsaw would get hot quickly so I recommend that you oil yours first before any use.

Since this is a gas engine, you can imagine that it wasn’t as quiet as a battery chainsaw. Additionally, make sure you don’t run it into the dirt. Otherwise the chain is going to dull very quickly.

The SDS drill was created by Bosch and Hilti in the twentieth century and replaced by the SDS Plus in the twenty-first century. The prime use of SDS drills involves punching through hard materials. 

Specifically, they aim to perform tasks that standard drills couldn’t handle, such as building, renovating, and demolishing. While the drill bit punches through, SDS drills rotate and hammer back and forth.

Further, there’s no denying that the SDS is one of the most durable, versatile, and capable drills on the market today. These drills are more efficient and faster than rotary or hammer drills. 

An SDS tool can drill through solid surfaces such as brick, concrete, steel, etc. These drills use a combination of rotary motion and hammering motion. 

A hammer drill chuck applies to hammer action by moving forward and back. However, the hammering action in the SDS drills happens by a mechanism within the chuck. 

The drill bits can also move backward and forward within the chuck. By doing so, they can apply force more precisely. As a result, it is easier to drill through dense materials quickly and efficiently with SDS.

SDS Plus

An SDS plus drill is usually a little bit better than a standard SDS drill. Both drill bits have four rails and are suitable for drilling concrete, bricks, and other similar material. 

But none of them are capable of drilling concrete with the reinforcement inside. A hammering, rotating, and combining mechanism is present in SDS and SDS plus. There are grooves on the shank of the SDS-Plus bits. 

A groove holds the drill bit firmly, yet it moves freely independent of the chuck. The inserting and removing process is simple and requires no tools. You may also find a similar system on some big rotary hammers.

Difference Between SDS and SDS Plus

It is usually better to use an SDS plus drill rather than a standard SDS drill. There are four rails on each of these drill bits. The SDS and SDS plus can help you drill through various materials. 

It is important to note that the SDS plus and SDS are both hammer drills. The SDS Plus range has shorter lengths and is suitable for creating smaller diameter holes.

Therefore, you should not put them in the same category as household bits. An SDS Plus bit is sometimes necessary for situations that don’t require a large hole or work close to edges. A hammer drill can drill into sturdy materials such as concrete and cement, while impact drivers help install and remove bolts and screws. While both tools possess similar power, their mechanisms of action are different.

The hammer hit the rear of the chuck. A force applies to the drill bit and the drilling target in response to these hits. Each time you strike the bit, you punch it forward. There are hammer drills capable of making up to 45,000 blows per minute.

Here is the difference between a hammer drill and an impact drill/driver.

Mechanism

Impact drivers use hammers and anvils to execute the work. Most impacts come equipped with two hammers, while a few may have three. In response to the movement of the motor on the tool’s hammer plate, a spring compresses, pushing the anvil and hammer plate aside. 

The gap between the plates is only visible for a short time, allowing the spring to accumulate potential energy. During this time, the anvil plate slides past the hammer plate before they collide again because of the spring’s kinetic energy. 

Consequently, torque and downward force develop due to the hammer hitting the anvil and transferring force onto the bit for turning the fastener. Rapid repetition of this process occurs with the impact driver. 

Besides, we determine the impact rate using tools’ IPMs or BPMs, which can reach 4000 in an 18-volt impact driver. As a result, the mechanism of hammer drills differs more in kind than in degree. However, this difference causes less torque and forward force than the impact drill. 

In the case of hammer drills, there are also two plates, but instead of hammers and anvils, they function the same way as putting checkers next to each other. A tooth slides between the bearings during drilling, pushing the drill upright and backward.

Flexibility

Even though the Bosch GCM12SD’s 120-volt miter saw is compact, it provides flexibility with a large capacity. Compared to other miter saws it is flexible that you can easily make 6.5-inch crown cuts. Well, this is the type of capacity that most woodworkers yearn for. 

In addition, Bosch also implemented a square lock system in the fences that are quite handy. This lock removes the hassle of manual work and pretending to keep your hands still while you are focusing on sliding the blade back and forth. Also, its all-metal bevel lock lever and range selector located in the front of the saw is a great aspect.

To begin, you need to find a piece of wood that fits your needs. This mainly depends on whether or not you want it to make a small pendant or a large showpiece.

To carve a wooden heart, make a sketch first on the wood. This will help you line your edges. Then, start by making two cuts perpendicular to each other in the center of the wood. Then, make two more cuts diagonally from these cuts, and finally, make two straight cuts along the edges of the heart.

 Once you’ve carved out your heart shape, sand down the edges until they’re smooth. Finally, finish off your carving by adding any details like initials or designs.

Although it’s unlikely you’ll use it for any practical purposes, it’s still a good ornamental object to hang around in your house.

While it may sound difficult, bowl carving is actually quite easy to learn and can be mastered with just a few tools and some practice. Once you get the hang of it, you can use advanced machinery like a lathe to make hundreds of them.

After you’ve mastered it, you can create more complex owls or other avians. You can even paint it if you wish.

Number 5 on our list of easy wood carving for beginners is carving a Pawn.

Pawn carving is a unique form of folk art that has been passed down through 19th-century china. It’s massively used in board games like Chess, Mahjong and Othello. In fact, they are treated as collector’s editions. The Viking chess set is one of my favorite variations that use wooden chess pieces.

The pawns look so elegant and simple yet it’s a show of skill, precision, and patience. While most projects will have you make curves, practicing making this one will teach you how to make oval shapes.

That’s not all, you have to polish them, as well as make them look identical. It’s definitely one of your first challenges but also one of your foundations to be a top woodworker. Quick assignment: once you’ve mastered it, try making wood spirits as they’re also identical.

Number is is a creating a couple of Chopsticks. Chopstick carving is a traditional Chinese art form that dates back centuries. Over time, however, it evolved into a distinct form of artistic expression. I’m sure you’ve seen them in your Chinese takeout. Surprised it’s on here? You probably didn’t know chopsticks could be considered carvings as well. 

Carving chopsticks is a delicate process that requires skill and patience. The basic technique involves first shaping the material into a rough chopstick shape and then slowly whittling away at it until the desired design is achieved. 

Just like the pawn carvings above, you need good precision so that both the sticks are of the same size and diameter. On top of that, you need to make the ends round shaped so that it doesn’t prick your palms. You’ll need 2 sets of sandpaper for this.

Taking this project will help you be precise with your cuts and chips, as well as teach you how much pressure to apply.

The end result is a uniquely carved pair of chopsticks that can be used for both practical and decorative purposes. Remember to give it a non-toxic coating.

Are you feeling like I’m giving you tough projects? Here’s an easy one for the last one on our beginner wood carving projects list. Unlike pawns or chopsticks, you have a lot of leeway in designing your own flower. Plus it has room for growth, after you’ve learned to sculpt simple ones, you can look into more detailed carvings. It’ll also perfect your whittling techniques.

There are merits in practicing this one, not only it’ll help you grow as a woodworker, it’ll work great as gifts for your family. Why pluck flowers that die soon when these can last decades. Besides, they look fantastic as ornaments so having a bunch of them scattered across your room is no biggie.

Here’s a tip: first draw your flower on a blank piece of paper. This will help you mentally form an image you want to carve.

Sure, while you start out it might not look impressive. But with patience and skill, it is possible to create beautiful and lifelike flower carvings from nothing more than a piece of wood and a knife.
